Umar Ayoola and Elizabeth Emelike represent Nigeria at the upcoming ITTF event in the UK.

Nigeria is poised to make a notable impact on the global junior table tennis scene as two young talents, Umar Ayoola and Elizabeth Emelike, have been selected to participate in the ITTF World Hopes Week & Challenge 2026. This prestigious event is set to take place from October 12 to 18 at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield, United Kingdom.
The ITTF World Hopes Week & Challenge is a significant platform that gathers 36 of the world’s most promising U-12 players from 26 countries. Jointly organized by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) and Table Tennis England, the event serves as the culmination of the ITTF’s talent identification pathway. It aims to provide young athletes with advanced training from elite coaches while allowing them to compete against some of the best emerging talents in the sport.
Ayoola and Emelike earned their spots in Sheffield following impressive performances at the Africa Hopes Week and Challenge held in Ghana, where they distinguished themselves among the continent's top prospects. Their selection reflects the rigorous process of advancement through the ITTF’s Continental Hopes programmes, which identifies only the strongest performers for this global stage.
This year’s edition of the World Hopes Week & Challenge highlights the expanding international reach of the programme, featuring young players from both established table tennis nations and emerging talents. Participants will not only engage in competitive matches but will also partake in intensive technical training sessions designed to enhance their skills.
The assessment of players will go beyond match outcomes, taking into consideration their technical abilities, attitudes towards training, and overall potential for development. Those who excel will have the opportunity to be selected for the prestigious Hopes Team, which offers a fast-track entry into the ITTF High Performance pathway.
Nigeria will be represented alongside other African nations, including Egypt, with players Zeina Farouk and Adam Lashin, Tunisia’s Ritej Charif, and Uganda’s Joseph Sebatindira. The event will also showcase talents from countries such as Australia, Belgium, Canada, England, France, India, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Qatar, Romania, Thailand, Uzbekistan, and Venezuela, emphasizing the truly global nature of this competition.
The ITTF World Hopes Week & Challenge 2026 promises not only high-level training and competitive action but also a rich cultural exchange among young athletes from diverse backgrounds, setting the stage for the next generation of table tennis stars.
