Veteran actor Richard Mofe-Damijo, popularly known as RMD, has made a compelling call for Nigerians to recognize their role as ambassadors of the nation. Speaking at the 2026 Pivot Nigeria conference held at the MUSON Centre in Lagos, RMD highlighted how individual actions contribute significantly to Nigeria's global reputation.

The conference, themed "The Reputation Dividend: Who Pays for Nigeria’s Perception?", gathered various stakeholders from the creative, media, and communications sectors, along with students and the general public, to discuss the implications of Nigeria’s image on its citizens and businesses. RMD articulated that every Nigerian represents the country through their conduct, urging citizens to uphold their values both domestically and internationally.

Reflecting on his upbringing, RMD shared how his mother instilled in him a strong sense of identity and responsibility. He stated, "I just remember that my mom drilled this thing down into my head so much that it became like an obsession for me, which is to say, remember whose child you are." This foundational lesson has shaped his understanding of representation throughout his life.

RMD emphasized that when Nigerians travel abroad, their behavior can significantly influence how the world perceives Nigeria. He remarked, "I am, in fact, representing all the institutions and people and country that I have encountered or that have branded me at one point or the other in my life."

He further challenged the notion of viewing the responsibility of representing Nigeria as a burden, stating, "We have a responsibility, not a burden... it becomes a thing that you do with pride." RMD also addressed negative stereotypes, such as the concept of "African time," asserting that punctuality is a value deeply rooted in African cultures.

The actor linked the concept of reputation to consistent behavior, drawing from his experiences in the entertainment industry. He noted that a strong reputation is built over time through disciplined actions, which he applies to his own productions, ensuring that events commence as scheduled.

RMD urged Nigerians to reflect on what they represent beyond personal identities, asking, "What is it that you carry inside of you? Who is it that you represent?" He expressed the importance of leaving institutions better than one found them, sharing insights from his own experiences in government.

Victoria Uwadoka, the convener of Pivot Nigeria, echoed RMD’s sentiments, emphasizing the collective responsibility of all Nigerians in shaping the nation's reputation. She stated that reputation is critical for building trust, which is essential for the sustainability of businesses and institutions. Uwadoka called on citizens, media, and government to work together in improving Nigeria’s image.

Uwadoka also encouraged active participation in elections, reminding citizens that disengagement allows others to dictate their leadership. She urged Nigerians to hold leaders accountable and recognize their role in shaping the future of the country, stating, "We should because Nigeria belongs to all of us. And if we don't push back, who will?"

The discussions at the Pivot Nigeria conference served as a reminder of the power each individual holds in influencing the narrative around Nigeria, reinforcing the idea that every citizen can contribute positively to the nation’s reputation on the global stage.
