The Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Justice Ekaete Fabian Obot, has called for a careful and systematic integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within Nigeria's justice system. Speaking at a public lecture titled "Justice in the Age of Artificial Intelligence – Transforming Nigeria’s Justice Sector through the Efficient Use of Artificial Intelligence," she highlighted the importance of ensuring that technology serves justice rather than dominating it.

Justice Obot delivered her address during the opening of the 2026/2027 legal year in Akwa Ibom, where she emphasized that the judiciary must not remain detached from the technological advancements reshaping various sectors. She pointed out that while AI holds significant potential to enhance efficiency in legal processes, its application must adhere to judicial values and ethical standards.

The Chief Judge elaborated on the various ways AI could assist the judiciary, including improving legal research, case management, and documentation. However, she stressed that technology should complement, not replace, the judgment and discretion of judicial officers. "The ultimate aim of introducing technological innovations into the justice system must be to enhance access to justice and boost public confidence in the judiciary," she stated.

In addition to her remarks on AI, Justice Obot expressed gratitude during a thanksgiving service, reflecting on the past year and her hopes for the judiciary in the coming legal year. She thanked the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, for his support and attention to the judiciary's needs.

Governor Eno, represented by Deputy Governor Akon Eyakenyi, acknowledged the strong relationship between the executive and judiciary branches since the beginning of his administration. He also announced the establishment of the Office of the Public Defender (OPD), which is set to commence operations in the new legal year, further enhancing legal representation for the populace.

Pastor Sylvanus Ukafia of the Insight Bible Church, who spoke at the event, reminded judges of their responsibilities and the ultimate accountability they hold to a higher authority. The call for a balanced approach to AI in the justice system resonates with ongoing discussions about the role of technology in legal frameworks across the globe, as stakeholders seek to innovate while preserving the core principles of justice.
