The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a suspect, Oloruntoba Babatunde, in connection with the production of a herbal drink that has been linked to the deaths of at least 29 individuals in the Araromi-Obu and Odigbo communities. The tragic incidents occurred after residents consumed the harmful liquid, leading to a significant health crisis in the area.

In a statement released by the police, it was confirmed that Babatunde, also known as 'Meko,' was apprehended alongside 14 others who violated a local government ban on the sale of herbal products. This ban was instituted following the alarming rise in fatalities associated with these substances. The police have stated that they are conducting thorough investigations into the circumstances surrounding the deaths, with the bodies of the deceased undergoing medical and forensic examinations to ascertain the causes.

The police spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, noted that the suspect is believed to have produced substances that may contain methanol, a toxic compound known for its harmful effects when ingested. Investigators have recovered these substances for further analysis to determine their exact composition and any potential links to the fatalities reported.

Health officials have been mobilized to provide medical assistance to affected individuals, with many young people from the communities receiving treatment at the Odigbo Local Government medical facility. The police have emphasized the need for immediate medical intervention as they work to contain the situation and prevent further loss of life.

In addition to Babatunde, the other suspects arrested include Ayemobola Abayomi, Ebeyilo Oyekan, Fadeyi Folake, Febisola Solomon, Olamojiba Akinyosoye, Julius Ogeichi, Seyifunmi Aduke, Adesanmi Toyin, Oluwoye Amaka, Adeyayi Ojo, Adebayo Olaniyi, Raphael Emeka, Adenuga Oluwaseun, and Adediwura Godwin. They were taken into custody for their involvement in the sale and consumption of the banned herbal drinks.

The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Akure for a more detailed and comprehensive investigation. A team of detectives was dispatched to Araromi-Obu on September 12 to gather further evidence and advance the investigation into this disturbing incident. The police have assured the public that they are committed to uncovering the truth behind these tragic events and ensuring justice for the affected families.
