Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and several senior European officials narrowly escaped a Russian drone strike that targeted a passenger train locomotive near the Poland-Ukraine border on Sunday. The incident took place in Ukraine's Volyn region, approximately two kilometers from the border, as a drone struck the locomotive of a train operating on the Kyiv-Warsaw route.

Fortunately, there were no reported injuries from the attack. Passengers on the affected train were evacuated or temporarily ordered to leave as Ukrainian authorities responded to the situation. Notably, Johnson was not on the train that was hit; he and other prominent Western figures were traveling on a separate train that had just departed the area after attending the Yalta European Strategy (YES) conference in Kyiv.

The 2026 YES conference, which took place on September 11 and 12, focused on the theme "Peace Through Strength NOW!" and attracted around 700 participants from 28 countries. Among those in attendance were Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s security adviser Günter Sautter, UK National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell, and former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt, along with senior officials from France, Italy, and other European nations.

In the aftermath of the drone strike, Johnson condemned the attack as a "random and senseless" act, emphasizing the ongoing dangers faced by Ukrainian civilians and railway workers. He reiterated his call for Western nations to bolster Ukraine's air-defense capabilities and suggested utilizing frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine's defense efforts. Johnson highlighted that over €140 billion is currently held in a Belgian bank account, with an additional £10 billion frozen in London, urging Britain to take the initiative in finding ways to utilize these funds for Ukraine's benefit.

This incident coincided with a significant escalation in Russian attacks against Ukraine, with the Ukrainian Air Force reporting the deployment of 453 Russian drones during an overnight assault. Ukrainian officials indicated that critical infrastructure in various regions was targeted, further heightening tensions in the area. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha characterized the drone strike as an indication of Russian terror reaching the "doors of the EU and NATO," accusing Moscow of intentionally targeting infrastructure that connects Ukraine with its European neighbors.

Initially, there was confusion regarding whether Johnson and the other dignitaries were on the train that was struck. However, it was later confirmed that they were on a different train that had passed through the vicinity shortly before the drone attack occurred.
