The Department of State Services (DSS) has issued a serious warning to religious leaders in Osun State regarding potential terror attacks targeting churches and mosques. This alert comes as part of an intelligence report indicating that terrorists are planning to disrupt the upcoming 2027 general elections by instigating violence in the southern region of Nigeria, particularly in the South-West.

On September 9, the DSS convened separate meetings with representatives from the Muslim community and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Osogbo. During these meetings, the DSS emphasized the need for heightened vigilance and preventive measures to safeguard places of worship and public gathering areas.

Alhaji Mustapha Olawuyi, the President of the Osun State Muslim Community, confirmed the authenticity of the warning. He stated that the DSS had conveyed intelligence suggesting that certain politicians and terrorists are collaborating to create chaos that could undermine the electoral process. Olawuyi highlighted the importance of caution, advising religious bodies to implement various security measures to protect their congregations.

"The DSS came from Abuja to Osun to warn us about a plot by some politicians and terrorists to frustrate the 2027 election, and for every one of us to be careful. They advised that all religious centres should be watchful," Olawuyi said. He further noted that the DSS urged mosques to restrict parking near congregants during prayers and to avoid allowing individuals to sleep within the mosque premises. Additionally, they warned against the use of compromised commercial motorcycles and herders, recommending the employment of night guards at every mosque.

Pastor John Adeleke, the Chairman of Osun State CAN, also confirmed the DSS's meeting with Christian leaders. He relayed that the DSS had instructed church leaders to enhance security awareness among their congregations and educational institutions. An excerpt from a report circulated among Christian WhatsApp groups detailed the DSS's concerns, stating that the agency had identified Osun State as a potential target for upcoming attacks.

The report indicated that the terrorists are expected to approach Osun via Kaduna and Jos, with plans to target various public gathering spots, including churches, mosques, markets, schools, and entertainment venues. In light of this alarming intelligence, church leaders have been urged to implement stringent security measures to ensure the safety of their members.

As the nation approaches the critical period of the presidential election, the DSS's warning underscores the pressing need for communal vigilance and cooperation among religious organizations to prevent any possible acts of violence that could disrupt the electoral process.
