Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has urged Nigerians to prioritize discussions on pressing economic issues rather than dwelling on past allegations against him. In a recent statement, Atiku highlighted that the renewed focus on historical controversies is a distraction from the significant challenges facing the country today, including rising costs of living, food prices, and insecurity.

Atiku's remarks come amid ongoing political discourse as the nation approaches the 2027 elections. He pointed out that the issues being resurrected from his time in office during the Obasanjo administration have already been thoroughly investigated by various institutions, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the National Assembly, and the courts. "No court convicted me on these allegations. That is the record," he stated, emphasizing his innocence.

The former Vice President criticized those defending the current government, suggesting that when they fail to provide solutions to the hardships faced by ordinary Nigerians, they resort to old political arguments. He asserted that such tactics do not address the immediate concerns of the populace, which include the affordability of basic necessities like food, transportation, and healthcare.

Atiku also called for greater transparency and accountability from public officials, insisting that institutions like the EFCC should operate independently and without political interference. He stated, "The EFCC belongs to Nigeria. It should investigate genuine wrongdoing wherever it finds it. State institutions must not be used for political purposes."
