Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has been handed a one-month suspension after testing positive for cocaine, as confirmed by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA). The 31-year-old athlete failed the drug test during an ATP Tour event held in Mallorca in June 2026.

Kyrgios was provisionally suspended last month, and the ITIA stated that his agreement to participate in a treatment program has resulted in a reduction of his suspension from three months to just one month. Following this decision, Kyrgios' suspension has already concluded, with the provisional ban running from August 4 to September 3, 2026.

The ITIA noted that Kyrgios had explained his cocaine use as being social and occurring during a night out, which was deemed consistent with the levels of the substance found in his system. This explanation contributed to the ITIA's decision to impose a lighter penalty, as the use was classified as occurring outside of competition.

In response to the provisional suspension, Kyrgios expressed regret over his actions, admitting on Instagram, "I made a huge mistake, and I take full responsibility for it. I'm sorry to my fans, my family, my sponsors, and everyone close to me. Above all, I'm sorry to the kids who follow me. I know the example this sets and I'm deeply disappointed in myself."

Kyrgios' last competitive singles match was a first-round loss to fellow Australian Adam Walton in Mallorca, marking only his fourth singles match of the season. His career has faced challenges due to ongoing knee and wrist injuries since his impressive run to the Wimbledon final in 2022, leading to a significant drop in his world ranking to 919.

While acknowledging the impact of his physical struggles, Kyrgios stated, "My body hasn't been able to do what my mind expects it to do, and coming to terms with being near the end of my career has been harder than I ever imagined. At times I've felt hopeless and alone. However, the good news is that this has given me a wake-up call."

To focus on his recovery, Kyrgios announced he would be taking a 28-day break from social media, emphasizing his commitment to returning as a better version of himself. He concluded his message with an assurance to his followers, saying, "I'm sorry, I'll come back better."
