Nigeria refutes claims of backing Niger coup attempt, reaffirms commitment to democracy
The Nigerian government has strongly denied allegations of supporting a failed coup in Niger, emphasizing its dedication to constitutional governance.

The Nigerian government has categorically dismissed allegations suggesting that it, along with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), supported a recent failed coup attempt in Niger Republic. In a statement released on Thursday, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, labeled these claims as false and misleading, asserting that they were designed to tarnish Nigeria's reputation.
Enikanolaiye emphasized that Nigeria is staunchly opposed to military coups and any unconstitutional changes in government. He reiterated the country's commitment to promoting democracy, stability, and constitutional order not only in West Africa but across the entire African continent. The minister pointed out that Nigeria's position on the situation in Niger had been clearly articulated in a previous statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on August 30, 2026, which expressed deep concern over the unfolding events in Niger.
The minister called for a peaceful and inclusive approach to restoring stability and constitutional governance in Niger. He stated, "Any resort to force to settle political differences is contrary to this objective and to Nigeria’s long-standing foreign policy."
Highlighting the historical and cultural ties between Nigeria and Niger, Enikanolaiye stressed that fostering peace, security, and democratic governance in Niger is a priority for Nigeria. He also refuted the notion that Nigeria’s membership in ECOWAS implies endorsement of any military takeover or unconstitutional government changes.
Furthermore, the minister urged Nigerians, both domestically and abroad, to disregard misleading narratives and videos circulating on social media that misrepresent the country’s foreign policy stance. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, as well as the African Union's zero-tolerance policy towards unconstitutional changes in government.
Enikanolaiye concluded by stating that Nigeria will continue to collaborate with ECOWAS, the African Union, and the international community to uphold democratic governance, maintain the rule of law, and promote peace and stability throughout West Africa and beyond.
