The Nigerian Navy's Onitsha Command has made a significant drug bust, seizing 19 bags of substances believed to be Cannabis Sativa. This operation culminated in a formal handover to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at their Onitsha Unit on Tuesday.

The seizure occurred in Atani Community, located in the Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State. According to the Commanding Officer of the Naval Outpost, Kabir Yusuf, the illicit drugs were recovered during a series of intelligence-led operations within the command’s jurisdiction. Yusuf detailed that personnel from the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Amiyi conducted routine patrols that led to the discovery of the drugs.

During these patrols, the Navy team spotted a vehicle suspected of transporting cannabis. Upon sighting the vehicle, the patrol team pursued it, but the suspect abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene. Following this initial chase, a follow-up operation directed security operatives to a warehouse allegedly used by the suspect to store illegal substances. This search resulted in the recovery of an additional bag of suspected cannabis, bringing the total to 19 bags.

Yusuf emphasized that this operation highlights the vigilance and professionalism of the Navy personnel in combating drug trafficking and ensuring public safety. He stated, “The suspected illicit substances were recovered during a routine patrol by personnel of the Forward Operating Base, Amiyi, at Atani Abo Community.”

The Navy has officially transferred the seized drugs to the NDLEA for further investigation and action. They have also requested that the NDLEA provide updates on the investigation's outcome once completed. This collaboration reflects a broader commitment to tackling drug-related issues in Nigeria and underscores the ongoing efforts by security agencies to maintain law and order in the region.
