The recent escalation of tensions between the United States and Iran has led to a significant rise in global crude oil prices. Following a series of airstrikes launched by the US against Iranian military targets, Brent crude oil prices surged to $95.49 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) climbed to $90.71 per barrel. This marks a day-to-day increase of 0.54% for Brent and 0.84% for WTI, reflecting the market's reaction to the ongoing conflict.

The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that the airstrikes targeted various Iranian military assets, including air defense systems and maritime capabilities, in retaliation for recent actions by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) that threatened commercial shipping in the strategic Strait of Hormuz. This conflict has not only raised concerns over regional stability but has also intensified pressure on global oil prices.

In a related development, diesel prices in the United States experienced a sharp increase, rising nearly 7% to $4.71 per gallon. In response to these inflationary pressures, President Donald Trump convened a meeting with stakeholders from the energy sector to address the implications of rising oil prices on the economy.

The repercussions of the escalating conflict are being felt in Nigeria, where domestic fuel prices have surged significantly. Reports indicate that prices at filling stations in Abuja have jumped between N46 and N100 per litre, now ranging from N1,310 to N1,345 per litre. This increase follows a recent price adjustment by Dangote Refinery, which raised its gantry price by N65 per litre.

The rise in fuel prices is likely to impact consumers and businesses across Nigeria, as the country grapples with the economic fallout from rising global oil prices. The situation highlights the interconnectedness of global events and their direct effects on local economies, particularly in oil-dependent nations like Nigeria.
