EFCC evaluates terrorism financing risks for Niger State non-profit organizations
The EFCC is assessing vulnerabilities in Niger State NPOs to combat terrorism financing.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has initiated an assessment of non-profit organizations (NPOs) in Niger State to evaluate their vulnerability to terrorism financing. This effort is being spearheaded by the commission’s Special Control Unit against Money Laundering (SCUML), which aims to identify potential gaps that could allow legitimate organizations to be misused for illicit financial activities.
During a recent visit to the Secretary to the Niger State Government, Alhaji Abubakar Usman, in Minna, Assistant Commander Tope Erinnomo, who leads the EFCC delegation, outlined the objectives of the assessment. He emphasized the importance of engaging relevant state agencies to thoroughly analyze the threats and vulnerabilities facing NPOs in the region. The agencies involved in this collaborative effort include the State Planning Commission, the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), and several ministries such as Homeland Security, Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Women Affairs and Social Development, and Youth and Sports Development.
Erinnomo also presented on the risk assessment of NPOs, detailing the various categories of terrorism financing risks that these organizations may encounter. He underscored the necessity for a comprehensive understanding of these risks to bolster preventive measures against the exploitation of NPOs for terrorism financing.
In response, Secretary Usman expressed the state government's commitment to supporting the EFCC's initiatives. He assured the delegation that his office would facilitate the necessary engagements with relevant ministries, departments, and agencies to enhance the assessment process. Usman highlighted the critical need for improved coordination and information-sharing among government institutions and stakeholders to effectively prevent legitimate organizations from being exploited for illegal financial activities.
This assessment comes at a time when the threat of terrorism financing remains a significant concern for governments worldwide. By focusing on NPOs, the EFCC aims to safeguard these organizations from being unwittingly drawn into illicit financial networks, ensuring that they can continue their vital work in communities across Niger State without the risk of being compromised.
