Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has committed to strengthening the partnership between his administration and the Nigerian Army to safeguard critical national assets and combat economic sabotage in the state. This pledge was made during a courtesy visit from Major General Everest Okoro, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 6th Division of the Nigerian Army, at the Government House in Port Harcourt.

Governor Fubara welcomed General Okoro and his team of senior military officers, highlighting the importance of their collaboration, which he noted has been in place long before his administration. He acknowledged the significant role the Nigerian Army has played in supporting the state during challenging times. "The Rivers State Government didn’t start this partnership today. It is a system that has been existing," he stated, referencing the successful cooperation with previous administrations.

The governor emphasized the necessity of joint efforts in light of current security challenges, particularly the protection of oil and gas infrastructure from vandalism. "It is a time when all the units and the stakeholders must come together and join hands to make sure that we protect our valuable assets from these criminals that have decided that their only stock in trade will be to vandalise and destroy critical national assets," Fubara remarked.

Fubara assured General Okoro of his administration's unwavering support, stating that the government would collaborate not only with the Nigerian Army but also with other military branches such as the Nigerian Air Force and the Nigerian Navy. He underscored the strategic importance of Rivers State to Nigeria's economy and urged the GOC to prioritize its protection.

In response, Major General Okoro reaffirmed the army's commitment to ensuring the safety of lives, property, and critical infrastructure in Rivers State. He expressed gratitude for the support received from the state government and its people, emphasizing the need for continued collaboration. "I respectfully look forward to the sustenance of this collaboration, particularly through enhanced information and intelligence sharing, community engagement and other forms of support that will facilitate the effective discharge of our responsibilities," he stated.

The GOC assured that under his command, the 6th Division would remain focused on its mandate of securing the state and fostering socio-economic development. He pledged to maintain professionalism in the army's operations, ensuring that the military works effectively alongside civil authorities to create a conducive environment for the people of Rivers State.

This renewed partnership between the Rivers State Government and the Nigerian Army comes at a crucial time, as both entities aim to address the pressing issues of economic sabotage and insecurity that have plagued the region, ultimately striving for a safer and more prosperous environment for all citizens.
