Michael Ogbuefi, a Marine and Offshore Environmental Specialist, has officially resigned from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) after just 13 months of service. His departure has sparked considerable discussion online, particularly among former employees of the national oil company, many of whom expressed surprise at the decision to leave such a significant position.

Ogbuefi joined NNPC Limited in July 2025 and concluded his tenure on August 31, 2026. In a detailed post on LinkedIn, he shared his reflections on the experience, highlighting how it provided him with a unique perspective on Nigeria's energy sector. He emphasized that his time at NNPC was not just about acquiring professional skills but also about gaining insights that extend beyond the workplace.

During his time at the company, Ogbuefi described his role as offering a rare vantage point into the complexities and opportunities within Nigeria's oil and gas industry. The announcement of his resignation has elicited various reactions from colleagues and peers. Gerald Ngwu, a fellow professional, expressed disbelief, commenting, "Omor, Person dey resign from NNPC? Ogbuefi's resignation comes at a time when NNPC is also making headlines for increasing petrol prices across the country. The company recently announced a price adjustment that raised the cost of petrol by N75, with new prices now ranging between N1,310 and N1,320 per litre, compared to the previous range of N1,230 to N1,299 per litre. This context adds another layer to the discussions surrounding Ogbuefi's departure, as many are reflecting on the current state of the energy sector in Nigeria.
