The Stone Rockers quarry in Abuja has been sealed for over a year due to its designation as a crime scene in an ongoing prosecution involving Stone Rockers Nigeria Limited and its director, Mr. Kolawole Olaiya. The Mining Marshals have clarified that the closure is a necessary legal measure, countering claims from the quarry operators that the shutdown is unlawful.

According to reports from Legit.ng, the Mining Marshals stated that the quarry's closure is not merely an administrative penalty but a critical step in the legal proceedings currently underway at the Federal High Court. The case, identified as Charge No. FHC/ABM/VR/338/2026, accuses the company and its director of conducting illegal mining activities within a licensed area owned by Lord's Career Ventures Nigeria Limited.

The Commander of the Mining Marshals explained that the case arose from multiple petitions submitted by Lord's Career Ventures over the past year. These petitions were referred to the Mining Marshals by the Minister of Solid Minerals Development and the Minister of Interior, leading to an investigation into the allegations. The defendants were reportedly arrested at specific coordinates that fall within the mineral title area claimed by Lord's Career Ventures, as confirmed by a letter from the Mining Cadastre Office dated January 23, 2026.

In a recent development, the Mining Marshals indicated that some workers previously removed from the charge sheet might be re-listed for prosecution. This reconsideration comes after some of these workers participated in protests against the quarry's closure, prompting the prosecutors to review their earlier decision to exclude them.

The Mining Marshals have dismissed the petition filed by Stone Rockers, asserting that it is part of a broader strategy to seek administrative relief while legal proceedings are ongoing. The Commander emphasized that the agency remains steadfast in its commitment to enforcing the law against illegal mining activities, stating, "No matter the level of blackmail and harassment deployed by illegal mining and erring industry players, the Mining Marshals will not be deterred from ensuring that the full weight of the law is pressed very tightly against everyone who breaks the laws in the Nigerian mining sector."

Furthermore, the agency refuted claims that its actions were financially motivated, clarifying that Lord's Career Ventures did not provide any logistic or financial support for the operations that led to the arrests.

The situation at the Stone Rockers quarry underscores the ongoing challenges faced by the Nigerian mining sector, particularly concerning illegal operations and compliance with regulatory frameworks. As the legal proceedings continue, the outcome will likely have significant implications for the parties involved and the broader industry in Nigeria.
