Ten months have passed since the tragic shooting incident in Akinlalu, Ile-Ife, Osun State, yet the families of two victims remain in anguish, desperately seeking the remains of their loved ones. The incident, which occurred on September 30, 2025, left four people dead and has since plunged the community into grief and uncertainty.

The victims, Oyebamiji Ibrahim and Oyebamiji Ismaila, were among those killed during an alleged operation by the Western Security Network, popularly known as Amotekun. While the bodies of the other two victims, Sefiu Oyebamiji and Abiola Olutayo, have been confirmed to be at local morgues, the fate of Ibrahim and Ismaila's remains remains a mystery. Their families are left with unanswered questions and a painful inability to provide a proper burial.

Eyewitness accounts suggest that Amotekun operatives arrived in Akinlalu in three vehicles and opened fire indiscriminately, resulting in immediate fatalities and injuries. Community leader Babarinde Olamide stated that the operatives were responding to a report concerning a locally fabricated firearm. He described the chaos that ensued, noting that three individuals were killed on the spot, while others were severely injured.

"In the process, the operatives took away the bodies of those killed as well as those who were critically injured," Olamide recounted. The aftermath of the shooting has left the community in fear, with residents demanding accountability and clarity regarding the incident.

The families of Ibrahim and Ismaila have been vocal in their distress, with Musibau Adeboye, the Youth Leader of Akinlalu, revealing that multiple appeals have been made to the Osun State government to assist in locating the missing bodies. Despite their efforts, which included letters to the state Attorney-General, no substantial progress has been made. Adeboye expressed frustration at the lack of response, stating that the government has shifted responsibility to the Commissioner of Police.

Mrs. Alaba Oyebamiji, the mother of the deceased, has been particularly affected by the ongoing uncertainty. She lost both Ismaila and Sefiu in connection with the incident and has been unable to find closure. "The prolonged withholding of my children’s remains has caused me and my family immense emotional and psychological hardship," she lamented.

Despite receiving compensation of N10 million from the state government, which was intended to assist the families, Mrs. Oyebamiji stated that the funds were largely consumed by medical expenses for Sefiu before his death, leaving little to ease their suffering.

The investigation into the incident has seen at least 20 Amotekun operatives arrested, and the commandant of the Osun State Amotekun Corps was also questioned. However, the whereabouts of the two missing bodies remain a pressing concern. The police have assured that the investigation is ongoing, but for the families and the community of Akinlalu, the lack of answers continues to weigh heavily on their hearts.

As they seek closure, the families of Ibrahim and Ismaila are calling for the state government to intervene and facilitate the release of their loved ones' remains. Until this is resolved, the tragedy of the Akinlalu killings will linger, leaving a profound impact on the community and the families affected.
