Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has commended President Bola Tinubu for his efforts in strengthening Nigeria's security institutions, particularly through the rehabilitation of the runway at the Nigerian Air Force Base in Port Harcourt. This project, inaugurated on Thursday, symbolizes the collaboration between the Rivers State Government and the Nigerian Air Force in addressing national security issues.

During the commissioning ceremony, Fubara emphasized that the newly rehabilitated runway is not just an infrastructure upgrade but a significant declaration of support for the Armed Forces. He stated, "What we commission this day is more than concrete and asphalt. It is a statement of intent — a declaration that Rivers State stands firmly with those who stand guard over Nigeria."

The governor expressed pride in the partnership with the Nigerian Air Force, recognizing it as a crucial institution for Nigeria’s unity and security. He noted that the sacrifices made by the Air Force personnel are vital for defending the nation’s territorial integrity and ensuring peace across the country.

Fubara acknowledged Tinubu’s leadership in enhancing the country’s security architecture, asserting that national security is foundational for all aspects of development. He remarked, "There can be no thriving economy without security," highlighting the critical role of security in fostering economic growth.

Given Rivers State's significance as the heart of Nigeria's oil and gas industry, Fubara pointed out that the state's security directly impacts national security. He stated, "The security of Rivers State is therefore inseparable from the security of Nigeria itself."

The governor reiterated the responsibility of state governments to support institutions that protect national assets, framing the runway rehabilitation as a manifestation of this duty. He explained that the facility will provide immediate operational benefits for the Nigerian Air Force, enhancing its capabilities in the South-South region.

Fubara also noted that the improved runway will bolster the Federal Government's efforts against economic sabotage in the Niger Delta, addressing issues such as crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism that threaten the national economy.

The ceremony also highlighted the strong relationship between the Rivers State Government and the Nigerian Air Force, extending beyond infrastructure to include personnel welfare. Fubara praised the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, and the NAF personnel for their dedication and contributions to the project.

In his remarks, Air Marshal Aneke lauded the successful completion of the runway, describing it as a testament to the effective collaboration between the Air Force and the Rivers State Government. He emphasized that the new facility is critical for ongoing air operations, training, and disaster response missions in the region, thereby enhancing the overall security framework of Nigeria.
