The Child Protection Network Nigeria has raised alarm over the increasing cases of child abuse and illegal adoption in the country, reporting a staggering 36 cases in just a few months. At a press briefing held in Abuja, the organization's National Coordinator, Olakunle Sanni, emphasized the urgent need for national action to enhance child protection measures across Nigeria.

Sanni outlined that the reported cases encompass various forms of abuse, including physical violence, neglect, child trafficking, sexual abuse, and illegal adoption. He stated that these incidents reflect the broader challenges faced by children in Nigeria, such as poverty, homelessness, hunger, exclusion from education, and inadequate healthcare.

Despite acknowledging the efforts made by the Federal, state, and local governments in areas like education and child protection, Sanni pointed out that millions of children remain vulnerable to serious risks. He stated, "These challenges are interconnected and require a coordinated national response," highlighting the urgent need for a comprehensive approach to address these issues.

Particularly concerning is the prevalence of sexual abuse, which Sanni described as one of the most disturbing violations against children. He noted that such abuse often occurs in environments where children should feel safe, including homes, schools, and religious institutions. The coordinator criticized the prevailing culture of silence surrounding child abuse, urging that perpetrators should not be protected by families or influential individuals.

Sanni also addressed the issue of child trafficking, revealing that many children are subjected to domestic servitude, sexual exploitation, and forced labor. He called on the government to bolster border protection, improve family tracing, and enhance public awareness initiatives to combat trafficking.

In addition, the report highlighted the alarming trend of child abduction, particularly from schools and conflict-affected areas. Sanni underscored that schools should be sanctuaries for learning and safety, not places of fear. He commended the efforts of government and security agencies in securing schools but stressed the need for improved intelligence gathering and community participation.

On the topic of adoption, Sanni clarified that while legal adoption is a vital child-protection mechanism, there are growing concerns over its misuse for trafficking and exploitation. He cited the recent sealing of Divine Hope Orphanage in Kagini for alleged illegal operations, which involved taking children from other states for purported adoption without following due process.

Sanni also mentioned ongoing legal proceedings involving lawyer Timipre Wolo and US-based Pastor Godstime Pender regarding child custody, noting that the adoption process must prioritize the welfare of the child above all else. He urged that all parties involved should protect the child from undue publicity and emotional distress during the legal battle.

Furthermore, the coordinator expressed concern for street-connected children, advocating for a comprehensive approach that treats these children with dignity rather than as criminals. He called on the government to provide safe accommodations, education, and vocational training to support these vulnerable groups.

Sanni concluded by emphasizing that protecting Nigerian children is a collective responsibility that involves government, communities, and various stakeholders. He stated, "The Nigerian child must not be an afterthought in Nigeria’s development agenda. Protecting the Nigerian child is not charity. It is a national responsibility." The Child Protection Network reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with the government and other stakeholders to ensure that Nigerian children can live, learn, and thrive in safety and dignity.
