The Solid Minerals Development Fund (SMDF) has announced plans to hold two live information sessions aimed at guiding prospective applicants for grant funding under its EMERGE initiative. This initiative is part of the Federal Government's broader strategy to attract investment and support early-stage projects in Nigeria’s mining sector.

The sessions will provide detailed insights into the funding opportunities available, eligibility criteria, and the application process for interested parties. Scheduled for August 20 and 21, 2026, these interactive sessions will be hosted by the EMERGE team, allowing potential applicants to engage directly and ask questions before submitting their applications.

The first session, focusing on Exploration and Critical Minerals, is set for Thursday, August 20, from 12 pm to 1 pm. The second session, which will cover Research and Development, will occur on Friday, August 21, from 11 am to 12 pm. The SMDF emphasized that these sessions are designed to enhance understanding of the EMERGE initiative and improve the chances of applicants successfully accessing the grants.

In a notice issued by the Fund, it stated, "The sessions are designed to provide applicants with detailed guidance on eligibility requirements, available funding streams, and the application process." This initiative aims to bridge the gap in Nigeria's mining sector, where many exploration projects face challenges in securing the necessary capital, technical expertise, and geological data to progress toward commercial production.

Despite Nigeria's rich deposits of commercially valuable minerals, the mining sector has struggled due to a lack of investment and support for projects in the early stages of exploration. The EMERGE initiative is specifically tailored to address these challenges by offering catalytic grants, technical support, and research funding to promising projects. This support is crucial for fostering early-stage exploration and development of critical minerals, as well as advancing geoscience research.

The Federal Government is keen on positioning the solid minerals sector as a significant contributor to economic growth, job creation, and export revenue, while also reducing the nation’s reliance on crude oil. By facilitating projects at the high-risk early exploration and research stages, the SMDF hopes to empower developers to generate the technical data and capacity needed to attract private investment.

The SMDF stated that the EMERGE initiative aims to "unlock Nigeria’s mineral potential by helping promising projects move past the early exploration stage, where most stall for want of capital, reliable data, and technical capacity." The live information sessions are expected to serve as a vital first step for potential beneficiaries looking to understand how their projects can qualify for support under this initiative. Interested applicants are encouraged to visit the EMERGE application platform for more information and to submit their applications.
