In a significant move to combat food insecurity, the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, officially launched the National Community Food Bank Programme for the South-West region on Tuesday in Makun, Sagamu, Ogun State. This initiative is part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on enhancing food security and improving health outcomes across the nation.

The launch marks the fourth zonal flag-off of the food bank initiative, which targets malnourished children under the age of six, pregnant women, and lactating mothers. According to a statement from Busola Kukoyi, the Senior Special Assistant to the First Lady on Media, the program aims to provide these vulnerable groups with access to nutritious food, thereby addressing critical health and nutrition challenges.

During the event, Senator Tinubu praised Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and his wife, Bamidele Abiodun, for their proactive establishment of three food banks in the state located in Sagamu, Yewa North, and Abeokuta. She emphasized the importance of local initiatives in supporting national efforts to combat malnutrition and food scarcity.

"This initiative is a deliberate and sustainable response to food insecurity and malnutrition among vulnerable households nationwide," the statement quoted the First Lady. She highlighted the program's design to ensure that essential nutritional support reaches those who need it most.

In addition to the food bank launch, the First Lady also commissioned the Muhammadu Buhari Housing Estate in Kobape, which consists of 108 housing units aimed at providing decent and affordable accommodation for Ogun State residents. This estate is strategically located along the Oke-Mosan-Kobape Expressway, addressing the pressing housing deficit in the area.

Governor Abiodun expressed gratitude to the First Lady for her commitment to improving living conditions in the state. He reaffirmed his administration's dedication to providing affordable housing solutions for citizens, stating that efforts will continue until the end of his tenure.

Furthermore, Senator Tinubu inaugurated the Gateway Medical Centre of Excellence during her visit, reinforcing her commitment to enhancing healthcare services in Ogun State. Her engagement also included meetings with traditional rulers, further emphasizing her outreach and collaboration with local leadership in addressing community needs.
